Highlighting that quality often surpasses quantity, the four-member senior women’s swimming team from Asian International School (AIS) earned a notable success at the concluded Long Course National Swimming Championship, held recently at the Sugathadasa Stadium Swimming Pool. Their impressive haul of seven medals secured them third place in the Senior Women’s category and the position of second-best school overall.
Despite competing against numerous top schools and clubs, including international teams from Dubai and the Maldives, AIS’s senior women’s squad outperformed expectations. They amassed 275 points, finishing behind only the Senior Women’s Champion Killer Whale Aquatics and Runners-up Ladies’
College.
The standout performers from AIS included Christina Perumal, Sithuki Yonara, Keshika Vishalini, and Cassandra Karunakalage. As the vice-captain of the AIS swimming team and a member of the Sri Lanka National Women’s Squad, Christina Perumal led the way with three individual medals: a silver in the 200m Breaststroke and bronze medals in both the 50m and 100m Breaststroke events.
Kashika Vishalini, also recently announced as a member of the Sri Lanka National Women’s Squad, clinched a bronze medal in the 200m Breaststroke. Sithuki Yonara serving as AIS swimming captain, added another bronze in the senior women’s 200m backstroke event.
The senior women’s 4x100m Medley Relay team, featuring Christina Perumal, Cassandra Karunakalage, Kashika Vishalini, and Sithuki Yonara, delivered a remarkable performance to secure a silver medal. The talented quartet also earned a bronze in the 4x50m Medley Relay, adding to their impressive medal tally.
In addition to the women’s success, the AIS three-member Men’s Senior Team – Kaviraaj Premanand, Muaaz Bary, Netehuka Perera, also performed admirably. They finished 12th overall, accumulating 68 points out of 22 leading senior schools and clubs in the country.
This success reflects the dedication and guidance provided by AIS Principal Dr. Harshana Perera and the sports department, led by Nihara Bagoos. Their continued support has been instrumental in nurturing a strong swimming program and producing top-notch swimmers over the years.
