Educating Girls for Climate Action
Amina A. Yusoof had the privilege of participating in the Educating Girls for Climate Action programme organised by the British Council Sri Lanka in partnership with the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association. The programme was funded by the UK’s Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS), with support from the British Council and the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association.
The initiative engaged over 100 Girl Guides aged 12–17 from different regions of Sri Lanka including Colombo, Jaffna, Matara, and Kandy to learn about climate change and its impact and practical solutions, with the aim of empowering young girls to become future climate leaders.
The programme included specially designed classroom sessions led by expert Youth Climate Ambassadors trained as facilitators. Guides were involved in hands-on activities such as beach clean-up campaign to reduce environmental pollution and a visit to the Mangrove Museum, where they learnt about the importance of mangroves in protecting coastal ecosystems and supporting biodiversity.
At the conclusion of the programme, the Girl Guides were honoured to receive a Certificate of Recognition for active participation from the British Council Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association.
This experience has inspired them to continue taking action within the community and contribute towards a more sustainable and resilient future.
